New Green Power & Gas

The aim is to transform the power plant site into a modern energy and technology centre. The basis for this is the termination of power generation from coal and the new combined heat and power (CHP) plant. However, switching from coal to gas is only the first step on the site's path to transformation. Further possible options include the conversion of the new CHP plant to H2-ready and a further H2-ready power plant at the site. H2-ready means that these power plants can also be operated with hydrogen in the future (project developments are underway), For later operation with 100% hydrogen, this power plant must be adapted by the manufacturer.

Approximately 870 MW_el operating mode (base and peak load) as a highly flexible H₂-ready CCGT

The Staudinger Power Plant in Großkrotzenburg is one of Uniper's most powerful power plant sites and the largest conventional power plant in Hesse. A total of five units were operated at the site until 2012. Units 2 and 3 were finally decommissioned at the end of 2012, followed by Staudinger 1 on April 30, 2013 after 48 years of operation.The remaining units 4 and 5 were classified by the Federal Network Agency as system-relevant until March 31, 2031. These units are now operated on behalf of the transmission system operator and continue to ensure safe and reliable grid operation.  Further possible option is a new H2-ready power plants at the site. Also called H2-ready CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) power plant. H2-ready means that these power plants can also be operated with hydrogen in the future (project developments are underway). For later operation with hydrogen, this power plant must be adapted by the manufacturer.

A new build development opportunity for Uniper adjacent to the existing Killingholme Power Station by developing a new combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) in a phased way which would result in phase I unabated CCGT, and phase II a number of years later, fitted with carbon capture technology to capture the CO₂ emissions.

A low carbon long-term replacement strategy for Uniper’s existing unabated asset at Connah’s Quay by developing a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) fitted with carbon capture technology to capture CO₂ emissions. Connah’s Quay, located within the HyNet industrial cluster in North Wales, UK, near Chester, is connected to a pipeline being repurposed as part of the CO2 transport and storage network.

NorthStarH2 aims to develop, build and operate a “Power-to-Methanol” (eMethanol) plant at the Lugnvik industrial site in Östersund, Sweden to convert up to 140 kt biogenic CO2 combined with ca.1.1 TWh renewable electricity annually to produce up to 112 kt eMethanol.

Import terminal for hydrogen using green and blue ammonia at Uniper’s terminal site with subsequent ammonia to hydrogen cracking. Germany’s only deep-water port for large-scale import vessels. Connection to Germany's largest salt caverns for hydrogen storage position and connection to future H₂ core core grid.

Shaping the green H₂ economy in the Central German Chemical Triangle together with our partners VNG Group, Terrawatt, ONTRAS. Stand-alone renewable energy source to a large-scale electrolyzer, subsequent production of green H₂, transport via a transformed natural gas pipeline to a refinery off-taker Total Energies in Leuna.

3,000 tons ​approx. (~99 GWh) per annum of green hydrogen in the first stage​

Development of an (initial) 30 MW electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen (~ 3ktpa). Uniper’s own site in Huntorf offers great potential for possible future expansions due to its direct connection to the hydrogen core network, its proximity to H₂ storage infrastructure and the power plant.
