Gas

Natural gas

The fossil energy source with the lowest carbon emissions - will be the bridging fuel to net zero. It will keep the energy system reliable while green electrification and the build-out of green gases gather momentum.

Uniper is one of Europe's largest gas and LNG merchants; we also built Germany's first LNG import terminal, located in Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea coast. In Germany, we supply roughly 190 terawatt-hours (TWh) of gas to municipal utilities and industrial customers annually. We're replacing Russian gas with a diverse portfolio of pipeline gas from other suppliers, LNG, and short- to mid-term market transactions. In addition we hold 57 TWh of LNG regasification bookings. This portfolio will enable us to continue to provide a reliable supply of gas to our customers.

We also have a total of 7.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of underground gas storage capacity in Germany, Austria and Britain. We have 5.9 bcm in Germany alone - the most of any operator.

We intend to repurpose part of our storage capacity to give us the capability to provide large-scale hydrogen storage.

In addition, we'll establish a portfolio of green hydrogen and biogas projects that will gradually replace natural gas in our supply business.

Our other energy sources

Hydrogen

Uniper is developing a hydrogen portfolio with the aim of a long-term transition. Uniper is a hydrogen pioneer. We’re active worldwide along the entire hydrogen value chain and are conducting projects to make hydrogen a mainstay of Europe’s energy…

Nuclear

Uniper is Sweden’s second largest nuclear power company. Uniper Sweden has three active nuclear power plants: OKG, Ringhals and Forsmark. We are the majority owner and operator of OKG in Oskershamn, a 1.6 GW nuclear power plant on the country’s east…

Coal

We closed two more coal-fired power plants - Ratcliffe in Britain and Heyden in Germany - in 2024. This took us another big step toward exiting coal entirely. Our commitment to quitting coal faces constraints, however, Germany’s Federal Network Agency…
