  • Wind farm capacity: 50 MW
  • Transport: 25 KM redirected H2 pipeline
  • Anchor customer: TotalEnergies Raffinerie Mitteldeutschland

At the Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park, the entire value chain for green hydrogen is being implemented on an industrial scale for the first time: from production to transportation and storage through to commercial use - right in the heart of the Central German chemical triangle. For the first time in the world, wind power from a nearby wind farm will be connected directly to a large-scale electrolysis plant of up to 30 megawatts at the Bad Lauchstädt energy park. The electrical connection is made via a so-called area grid - a privately operated electricity grid that works independently of traditional grid operators. This innovative infrastructure enables particularly efficient and direct use of renewable energy for hydrogen production.

The green hydrogen produced at the Bad Lauchstädt energy park is fed directly into the hydrogen network of the Central German chemical industry via a converted natural gas pipeline. In the future, it will also be used for urban mobility solutions.

In a later phase of the project, the hydrogen will be stored in a specially equipped salt cavern - a key step towards flexible supply and grid stabilization.

The Bad Lauchstädt energy park thus covers all the central elements of intelligent, large-scale integration of green hydrogen - from production to use and storage. The project is an example of sector coupling on an industrial scale.

The consortium partners Uniper and VNG Handel & Vertrieb GmbH are responsible for the planning, construction and operation of the electrolysis plant. They are pooling their expertise in the joint venture Elektrolyse Mitteldeutschland GmbH (EMG).

Innovation for a sustainable energy future

The successful combination of generation, transportation, storage, marketing and use of green hydrogen is regarded as a central building block for a secure, sustainable and economical energy supply of the future. The Bad Lauchstädt Energy Park is helping to research these future technologies and bring them to market maturity - for a technologically strong and future-oriented hydrogen region and successful sector coupling in Central Germany.

This is how the Bad Lauchstädt energy park works: power generation, storage, transportation, marketing and use along the entire value chain.
