Climate and environmental protection are inextricably linked. The loss of ecosystems and biodiversity is accelerating climate change and, conversely, global warming is endangering the stability of entire habitats - and therefore also the basis of our work. As an energy company, we are aware that our business activities can have a direct and indirect impact on the environment. Our ultimate goal is therefore a CO2-neutral energy supply.*

Nature protection, biodiversity, resource conservation and waste management are integral components of our Group strategy and therefore of all our business activities. With our environmental management system, we closely examine the impact we have on the environment and continuously look for ways to limit this as far as possible. On our way to achieving this, we have set ourselves consistent obligations for the entire Group.

*Including offsetting, where economically viable. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are heading towards neutrality by 2040 as part of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Scope 3 emissions will fall in line with market developments, customer behavior and political targets

Our environmental policy

We comply with all applicable national and international legal requirements for environmental protection. We have also developed an environmental guideline. It describes our approach to dealing with climate change, environmental pollution, water resources, biodiversity, resource utilization and the circular economy, including waste management. Our environmental policy is a framework with which we can monitor the most important content through our Environmental Management System (EMS), certified in accordance with ISO 14001, at our sites. The certificate is audited annually and renewed every three years. Our EMS includes a commitment to continuous improvement. In addition, we operate an asset risk management system that includes the assessment and management of environmental risks at our facilities.

Our approach

  • Actively contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonize our portfolio as quickly as possible, in line with the European Union's framework conditions.
  • Minimize our environmental impact and protect the environment on the way to carbon neutrality.
  • Protect and restore biodiversity and ecosystems in our operations and new developments.
  • No serious environmental incidents.
  • Continue to certify 100% of Uniper's operating facilities to ISO 14001.
  • Manage water in a resource-efficient way by better understanding and considering the specific impacts and dependencies of our operations.
  • Work with suppliers, contractors and customers to improve resource efficiency and promote life cycle approaches.
  • Support the transition to a circular economy, including the prevention of waste and increased reuse and recycling.

Biodiversity

We are aware that reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and those of our customers is the top priority for the protection of biodiversity. In fact, this is where we see our greatest contribution to be made. The transformation to new technologies must always take biodiversity into account in order to avoid the simultaneous degradation of ecosystems.

We have identified several areas of action for the active protection of biodiversity that are currently in focus. A central element is the integration of biodiversity into our strategic and investment decisions.
