Uniper's evolution in the Netherlands
The history of Uniper in our country is closely linked to the evolution of the European energy market and the company's strategic decisions.
To trace our origins, we go back to 2000, when E.ON acquired Electriciteitsbedrijf Zuid-Holland (EZH). But that wasn't all: NRE Energie and Q-ENERGY in Eindhoven followed soon after.
The transformation from E.ON Benelux to Uniper Benelux in 2016 marked a new phase. This shift placed a focus on unique performance (the origin of our company name Uniper) and reliability in energy supply.
A changing market led to the recent nationalization of Uniper by the German government in 2022. Our company has shown the adaptability required to navigate these changes.
Developments throughout the years

Changing market conditions and nationalization (2019-2022)
Uniper adjusts to market changes after Fortum's 2019 acquisition. In 2022, the German government nationalizes Uniper, a strategic move during tough times.
2040: The future of Uniper is green

Uniper's commitment to sustainability is evident in its ambition to become fully CO2-neutral by 2040. In the Netherlands, Uniper is dedicated to producing green hydrogen at the Maasvlakte. Additionally, we collaborate with surrounding industries to exchange by-products, contributing to the reduction of the CO2 footprint.
Carbon neutral

With these steps, Uniper Benelux is moving towards a carbon-neutral future. This aligns with the company's 2040 goals and its broader vision for sustainability and innovation.
Uniper's history in the Netherlands illustrates a continuous evolution and adaptation to both local and international energy needs and policies. Meanwhile, the company remains committed to providing reliable and sustainable energy.
