What is the necessity of hydrogen production?
The production of hydrogen is of great importance for the Netherlands for several reasons. Firstly, hydrogen plays a crucial role in the energy transition. It can replace fossil fuels and provides a solution for the long-term storage of renewable electricity. This is essential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower CO2 emissions.
Additionally, hydrogen is indispensable for the sustainability of industrial processes, such as steel production and the chemical industry. By switching to hydrogen, these sectors can significantly reduce their ecological footprint.
The development of hydrogen technologies also offers new economic opportunities and drives innovation within the Netherlands. This can lead to the creation of new jobs and strengthen the Netherlands' competitive position in the international market.
About hydrogen at the Maasvlakte
Uniper and Technip Energies completed the FEED study (Front End Engineering Design) in early 2024. H2Maasvlakte aims to gradually scale up the total electrolyzer capacity to 500 MW for green hydrogen production. The first 100 MW could potentially become operational between 2028 and 2030.

Why is the Maasvlakte the perfect location?

Uniper Benelux aims to be climate-neutral by 2040, with hydrogen playing a crucial role in this plan. The strategic location of Uniper at the Maasvlakte is ideal for green hydrogen production, thanks in part to its proximity to offshore wind farms in the North Sea.
Additionally, Uniper is collaborating with the Port of Rotterdam to develop large-scale hydrogen infrastructure. This is essential for the decarbonization of the Rotterdam industrial area and could serve as a model for other regions. Uniper also recognizes a growing market for green hydrogen and aims to take a leading position in the region, spanning from Amsterdam to Antwerp and from Rotterdam to the Ruhr area.
Focus on the future

In short, hydrogen production not only enables the Netherlands to achieve its climate goals but also stimulates economic growth and innovation. Uniper Benelux plays a key role in this by investing in sustainable hydrogen production and collaborating with major partners in the region.
Uniper's H2Maasvlakte project can make a significant contribution to the Dutch government's target of having an electrolysis system with a capacity of 3-4 GW for green hydrogen operational by 2030.
