Information on the Etzel EGL storage site – Reaching the critical filling path

Due to persistently unfavourable market conditions, 5.826 TWh could not be marketed and in accordance with the legal regulations offered for booking and filling by Trading Hub Europe (THE)

After several failed attempts to market the storage capacity, the new filling level target for the Etzel EGL storage facility (80% on 1 November), which came into force on 6 May 2025 by way of an ordinance (GasSpFüllstV) of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), can no longer be reliably achieved with regard to the physical injection capacity for 2025.

Uniper Energy Storage GmbH still has a free capacity of 5.826 TWh in the Etzel EGL storage facility for the current storage year 2025/26, which could not be marketed due to permanently unfavourable market conditions. Even at the last auction on June 18, 2025, there was insufficient demand despite the recent increase in the summer-winter spread.

The critical filling path for the fixed portion of this free capacity, from which continuous storage would have had to be carried out to secure the filling level target for Etzel EGL, began on August 7, 2025. Uniper Energy Storage GmbH has offered this capacity to Trading Hub Europe GmbH (THE), which is responsible for the market area, in good time for booking and filling. So far, no measures have been taken in accordance with Section 35 c (2) of the EnWG.
