NorthStarH2 – renewable electrofuel in Östersund
The climate transition in Sweden is progressing. However, there are sectors that are more complex to electrify than others, particularly the chemical industry and heavy transports. This is where e-fuels and NorthStarH2 come into play.

NorthStarH2 is Uniper's project in Östersund, in the north of Sweden, aimed at reducing industry’s reliance on fossil fuels by developing eMethanol to replace fossil fuels in the shipping and chemical industries. eMethanol, a fossil-free eFuel, is produced by combining electricity and water to generate hydrogen. Then, biogenic carbon dioxide, captured from the flue gases of biomass combustion, is added. In this way, fossil carbon dioxide emissions can be replaced with captured and reused biogenic carbon dioxide.
Östersund offers excellent access to renewable electricity and water. There is a strong political will both in the municipality and the region to drive the green transition. Additionally, the area has well-established infrastructure, with road and rail connections that enable the fuel produced to be transported across Sweden and into Europe.
Strategic partnerships
NorthStarH2 is built on strong partnerships. Uniper has signed an agreement with the regional energy company Jämtkraft to capture carbon dioxide from their bioenergy plant. Furthermore, Liquid Wind has been commissioned to lead the project’s development by utilizing its unique project method, which includes a standardized design and a digital platform for the efficient replication of eMethanol facilities.
Climate neutral eMethanol for the future of transport
The goal with NorthStarH2 is to produce 100,000 tons of eMethanol to be used in shipping and the chemical industry. For example, it can replace the toxic heavy oils that many cargo ships run on today. Ultimately, this could allow for the reuse of 160,000 tons of biogenic carbon dioxide, replacing fossil-based emissions.

Environmental permit application
Uniper is in the process of applying for an environmental permit for NorthStarH2. The consultation is a statutory process in the Environmental Code for gathering information and knowledge prior to a permit application . The consultation also gives authorities, local residents and other stakeholders the opportunity to provide information and views on the planned activity at an early stage.
