The Staudinger Power Plant in Großkrotzenburg is one of Uniper's most powerful power plant sites and the largest conventional power plant in Hesse.

A total of five units were operated at the site until 2012. Units 2 and 3 were finally decommissioned at the end of 2012, followed by Staudinger 1 on April 30, 2013 after 48 years of operation.

The remaining units 4 and 5 were classified by the Federal Network Agency as system-relevant until March 31, 2031. These units are now operated on behalf of the transmission system operator and continue to ensure safe and reliable grid operation.

In addition, the local community is supplied with district heating through the use of replacement boilers.

The Staudinger site is to be retained as an energy location in the future. The aim is to use the excellent infrastructure and install new systems to ensure a sustainable, reliable and flexible energy supply in the future. The Staudinger site will be transformed and make an important contribution to the energy transition.

Dismantling of the cooling towers of unit 1 & 2

Video file

In May 2024, the four cooling towers of the decommissioned Staudinger 1 & 2 power plant units were dismantled. Work has been carried out for several years at the Staudinger site to dismantle the units that have already been decommissioned.

It took between 60 and 90 minutes each time for the wrecking ball, which seems tiny compared to the 40-meter-high structures, to knock so many holes in the cooling towers that they collapsed. In the next steps, the outer rings and then the transmission shafts were also brought down with the wrecking ball. The rest is done by large excavators with hydraulic demolition shears.

Insight into the revision work at the Staudinger power plant

Last year, a major revision took place in unit 5 of the Staudinger power plant. The time-lapse videos created on this occasion provide an insight into the work. The revision in unit 5 took place from the end of July to the end of October 2021. During this time, an additional 350 employees from partner companies were working on the power plant site.
