The hydropower plant group Danube comprises run-of-river plants along the Danube in Germany.

Uniper currently operates 13 run-of-river power plants on the Danube, which have a combined capacity of around 226 megawatts and generate around 1.4 billion kilowatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity per year. This is enough to supply around 465,000 private households with electricity and save around 805,000 tons of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2.

Dikes and dams on the Danube are used for flood protection as required by the authorities, which Uniper ensures. From time to time, rotten trees that endanger the stability of the dams or traffic safety, for example, have to be removed. There - and on many other stretches of river - Uniper creates ecologically valuable biotopes. These are mostly flower-rich meadows and rough grasslands. To ensure that they can develop, a sensitive mowing concept was developed together with nature conservation. The dams are mowed only once or twice a year, and the cuttings are removed so that the flora can develop.

Overview of the power plants within the Danube hydropower group

As a partner of the waterways and shipping authorities, Uniper helps to ensure the safety and reliability of traffic on the Danube and on part of the Main-Danube Canal. The area of responsibility here extends over 13 barrages from Bertoldsheim to Kachlet. The part of the Danube and the Main-Danube Canal for which we are responsible has a length of around 300 river kilometers. The main task of our employees in the central control room is to ensure constant flow and level control in order to guarantee proper lock operation and a constant level to maintain navigation at all times.

For Deutsche Bahn, hydropower is an important energy supplier. The six plants Bertoldsheim, Bittenbrunn, Bergheim, Ingolstadt and Vohburg as well as the Abbach power plant therefore exclusively generate traction current with a frequency of 16.7 hertz.
