We are a member of important associations and initiatives that are directly or indirectly linked to our key sustainability issues. Their composition is sometimes extremely diverse. However, they are all relevant to our sustainability efforts. As a rule, they relate to topics such as gas, coal, technology and climate protection.

Bettercoal

Bettercoal is a non-profit initiative founded by several major European energy companies, including Uniper. The initiative is committed to a responsible coal supply chain and has developed an international standard for this purpose. Bettercoal assesses the performance of coal mining companies using its Code 2.0, which contains detailed guidelines for human rights due diligence. Based on these assessments, companies develop plans to continuously improve sustainability in coal mining. This includes the assessment and commitment of companies to mitigate the direct and indirect risks and impacts of on-site activities on the environment and biodiversity.

Econsense: Forum for Sustainable Development of German Business

Econsense unites multinational companies with a common goal: they want to actively shape the transition to a more sustainable economy and society. The forum supports members in anchoring sustainability in their strategy, their activities and along their supply chain. Econsense focuses on all relevant topics, from environmental protection to human rights. The focus is always on the business case for sustainability. The forum currently has 51 members from various industries. We have been one of them since 2018.

UN Global Compact

We have been a member of the United Nations Global Compact since June 2025. By participating in the world's largest initiative for responsible corporate governance, we are committing to the ten principles of the Global Compact - including in the areas of human rights, labor standards, the environment and the prevention of corruption. Participation helps us to further systematize our existing commitment to sustainability, identify international developments at an early stage and take them into account in our business activities. At the same time, the platform enables us to exchange ideas with other companies and institutions in order to continuously develop our measures in the area of responsible corporate governance.

Nadja Wendler, Senior Vice President Sustainability says:

"Participation in networks such as Econsense or the UN Global Compact enables us to actively shape the change towards greater sustainability. It helps us to measure our progress and compare ourselves with other companies. By working together, we also underline our understanding of responsible corporate behavior as part of a shared global responsibility."

RECOSI

We are a member of the RECOSI (Responsible Commodities Sourcing Initiative), which was founded in 2024 and supports us in identifying environmental, social and human rights risks in our gas supply chains. RECOSI's planned measures include the review of self-assessment questionnaires by third parties in the ESG assessment process as well as recommendations for risk minimization and action planning in cooperation with suppliers. In this way, we not only contribute to the protection of affected communities but also strengthen the integrity and sustainability of our business.

Sector dialogue energy industry

The “Sector Dialogue on Respect for Human Rights along the Global Supply and Value Chains of the German Energy Industry” initiated by the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs (BMAS) is part of the National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights (NAP). The NAP implements the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UN Guiding Principles) in Germany with the aim of improving the human rights situation along global supply and value chains.

We have been involved in the dialogue, which is organized as a multi-stakeholder process, since it was founded at the beginning of 2023. The sector dialogue currently consists of 21 members made up of companies, associations, trade unions, civil society organizations, the German Institute for Human Rights and the BMAS.

Goals of the sector dialogue

The overarching aim of the dialog is to provide companies with guidance and support them in adequately implementing the human rights due diligence requirements formulated in the NAP along their supply and value chains.

Komm, mach MINT

As part of our commitment to greater diversity and inclusion, in 2020 we joined the “Komm, mach MINT” initiative, which supports young women in Germany to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, information technology, natural sciences and technology (STEM). The initiative promotes the exchange of information and helps participants gain insights into companies from various sectors where STEM skills are relevant.

Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0)

In 2020, we joined the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, a voluntary initiative launched by the UN Environment Program, Environmental Defense Fund and the European Commission. Its purpose is to promote industry-wide collaboration to help oil and gas companies report on and reduce their methane emissions, promote transparency and share best practices.

Initiativkreis Ruhr

The Initiativkreis Ruhr, of which we have been a member since 2024, is an economic alliance of large companies and institutions from the region and beyond. A strong network has developed over the course of more than thirty years. Together, projects and initiatives are initiated and implemented that contribute to the economic and social development of the Ruhr region. Since 2022, this has also included the her.summit. The networking event for female managers in the Rhine-Ruhr region is hosted by a different one of the more than 70 partner companies each year. The aim of the event series is to make female managers and female executives in the Rhine-Ruhr region more visible and at the same time highlight the diverse career opportunities in the region.
