In June 2024, Uniper decided to recommission the pumped storage plant in Happurg, east of Nuremberg, investing around €250 million in reliable energy infrastructure in Bavaria. Uniper is thus supporting the energy transition and continuing its transformation toward more renewable power generation.
Pumped storage operations have been suspended since 2011 as a precautionary measure due to localized damage to the base of the upper reservoir. Since then, intensive investigations of the subsoil have been carried out, geotechnical assessments have been prepared, and various approaches to remediation have been examined. Based on the findings, a technical concept for upgrading the upper reservoir has been developed and refined, enabling it to be recommissioned in a cost-effective manner. The responsible licensing authority, the Nürnberger Land District Office, has approved this concept as part of a planning approval procedure. The plant technology in the powerhouse will also be repaired as part of the overall project. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028.
